Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet (BRFLAIM) utilizes foreign language immersion to offer rigorous academic instruction. Foreign language immersion is a method by which students learn academic subject material using the second language as the means of instruction. BRFLAIM students study the academic subjects of math, science, and social studies using French, Mandarin, or Spanish. This promotes learning a language in the most natural way--in context.

When students enter BRFLAIM at the kindergarten or first grade level, parents choose a language track of French, Mandarin, or Spanish. The student will receive instruction in that chosen language through 5th grade in the subjects of math, science, and social studies.  English is used only during the English Language Arts period and is taught by native English speakers. Students who complete the program through 5th grade are bilingual. Through their immersion experience, students also develop a deep appreciation for the language and culture of other countries.

Teachers at BRFLAIM represent the countries of France, Belgium, China, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Columbia.  This exposure to languages and cultures from around the world creates a unique learning experience that prepares students for life beyond the classroom.

Each year, BRFLAIM students complete a year-long, in-depth research project on a country where their chosen language is spoken.  The project culminates in the spring with BRFLAIM’s International Festival where students present information about the country they studied through displays of student work and performances.

In the past three years alone, BRFLAIM has been recognized at state, national, and international levels for the strength of the program.  In 2016, FLAIM was awarded the LabelFrancÉducation by the French government. In 2017, BRFLAIM was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, and for the second time was named a State Certified Immersion Site by the Louisiana Department of Education. In 2018, Magnet Schools of America named BRFLAIM a Certified National Magnet School and awarded BRFLAIM with the Magnet School of Distinction Award.
